Why use Java at all?
The combination of Java and the Internet or Intranet makes the most compelling system today for distributed data access. Some of these are technical, others are business reasons.
- With a Java front-end to your database, customers, employees and System Administrators can access a database from anywhere with only a network connection and a browser.
- No other language has been developed from the ground up to run over networks.
- Java is a fast, 32 bit and multi-threaded language.
- It has excellent combination support for sound, graphics and data.
- Java is totally object oriented. This allows for completely parameter-driven interfaces. Such an interface allows the GUI to change on-the-fly, according each user's personal parameters.
- Java webtop applications allow instant software distribution. Because a Java webtop application comes over the network in real time, client software does not need to be duplicated, packaged, distributed, installed or upgraded.
- Java webtop applications are platform independent. One invocation on a server can potentially run across Windows, UNIX, Macintosh and any other Java compatible platform.
- A client needs only a network connection and Microsoft Internet Explorer or other Java compatible browser to run your Java database application.
The result is a powerful front-end with short development time and no distribution headaches. JDesignerPro will help you reduce IS costs.
System and Network Requirements
To employ a JDP database front end for your Intranet, your systems should be similar to the following.
- WindowsNT server.
- MS-Internet Information Server or similar server software.
- ISDN or faster connections are a plus, although 28.8KBps is quite useable for clients.
- ODBC-compatible data sources on the servers. These can be anything from MS-SQL Server to Oracle to simple ODBC compliant files.
- Java-capable clients. These currently include Windows95, NT, Macintosh 7.53, or UNIX platforms with Microsoft Internet Explorer or another Java compatible browser.
System administrators please note that you can build useful systems just for database administration using JDesignerPro. In fact, this is the best place to start to learn and test such a Java system, before committing to go company wide.
BulletProof.com highly recommends moving severs and clients to WindowsNT operating system for use with Java-based applications and for NT's built-in networking features.
